Trillion Dollar Coach: The Leadership Playbook of Silicon Valley’s Bill Campbell

As leaders at Google for more than a decade, Rosenberg and Eagle had the benefit of experiencing Campbell’s coaching firsthand.

For this book, the authors interviewed over 80 people with whom Campbell worked, including Sheryl Sandberg, Susan Wojcicki, Marissa Mayer, John Doerr, Mary Meeker, and members of the boards of Apple, Google, Intuit, and Columbia University.  Through stories from these luminaries, Trillion Dollar Coach features specific strategies and action steps to help managers implement Bill’s principles and emulate his winning approach, including:

  • Give people the room to debate
  • Build an envelope of trust
  • Reinforce a “team-first” mindset
  • Tap into the power of love

Although he was perhaps the greatest executive coach of all time, Bill shunned the spotlight and rarely gave interviews.  The authors hope that by open sourcing his principles and sharing stories of how they have worked for others, they can help people at all levels become more effective managers and leaders.  

About the Authors

Eric E. Schmidt* served as Google CEO and chairman from 2001 until 2011, Google executive chairman from 2011 to 2015, and Alphabet executive chairman from 2015 to 2018.

Jonathan Rosenberg was a Senior Vice President at Google and is an advisor to the Alphabet management team. He ran the Google product team from 2002 to 2011. He formerly ran the Google product team and met biweekly with Bill. 

Alan Eagle has been a director at Google since 2007. Formerly Eric and Jonathan’s speechwriter, he currently runs a set of Google’s sales programs. 

They are also the authors of How Google Works (Grand Central Publishing, 2014).

About William Vincent Campbell, Jr. (the subject of Trillion Dollar Coach)

Bill Campbell was born on August 31, 1940, and grew up in Homestead, Pennsylvania, near Pittsburgh. He left home in the fall of 1958 for Manhattan to attend Columbia University, where he stood out, despite his small stature (shy of five ten and weighing in at 165 pounds) as a football hero. He graduated in 1962 with a degree in economics, received his master’s in education in 1964, and migrated north to become an assistant football coach at Boston College. In 1974, he returned to his alma mater to serve as head coach of Columbia’s football team. In 1979, at the age of thirty-nine, Coach Bill left football and entered the business world.

Excelling at sales and marketing, he quickly rose up the ranks at Kodak. In 1983, he accepted an offer to move west and join a fledgling technology company, Apple. Within nine months, he was promoted to VP of sales and marketing, and tasked with overseeing the launch of the highly-anticipated Macintosh computer. In 1990, he left Apple to become CEO of GO Corporation, then, in 1994, he became CEO of Intuit. In 2000, he took on a new challenge—and found his next calling—as an executive coach.

Over his 16-year tenure in Silicon Valley as an advisor to technology industry stars, Bill Campbell coached, among others, Larry Page, Eric Schmidt, Jonathan Rosenberg and Sundar Pichai at Google, Steve Jobs at Apple, Brad Smith at Intuit, John Donahoe at eBay, and Dick Costolo at Twitter. He also coached Donna Dubinsky, CEO of Numenta; Nirav Tolia, former CEO of Nextdoor; Mike McCue, CEO of Flipboard; and Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook, as well as several members of the Google, Apple, and Columbia boards and notables from NFL Hall of Famer Ronnie Lott to Vice President Al Gore.

Bill Campbell succumbed to cancer, at age seventy-five, on April 18, 2016. 

About the Moderator

Shellye has over 25 years of experience in technology leading organizations focused on business to business as well as business to consumer. She is a recognized expert in marketing and co-authored, "Marketing That Works: How Entrepreneurial Marketing Can Add Sustainable Profits to Any Sized Company." She has held EVP of Sales and Chief Marketing Officer roles for two public companies and as President of Blockbuster.com, launched the entertainment retailer’s first online presence. She was named the second most influential African American in IT by Business Insider in 2013. In 2015, she was ranked one of the “100 Most Influential Business Leaders in America” by Newsmax and that same year received the NCWIT Symons Innovator Award from The National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT). Shellye is also a sought-after speaker on governance, risk and compliance as well as marketing and entrepreneurship. She guest lectures at Stanford’s Graduate School of Business and The Wharton School of Business.
