In the month of September, Watermark invites you to join us for an original forum with leading experts and high-profile speakers who offer a transparent and honest discussion about various aspects of wealth that define your life.

 

Lata Krishnan will provide key insights into her own experiences as a leader and then will join a panel of inspirational leaders, moderated by Mary McDougall, Vice President of Astia. Panelists include Kate Cochran (Upaya Social Ventures), Jennifer Ma, Senior Wealth Manager, BNY Mellon Wealth Management, Dr. Hemalee Patel, Board Certified Doctor of Internal Medicine and Lifestyle Medicine Expert at Stanford University. The discussion will focus on growth within your leadership careers, the realities of isolation among successful peers and coping with impostor syndrome while presenting and living a successful life. Learn how these incredible executives have handled success, used wealth for good, and found real-life solutions when life starts spiraling both up and down. Whether you are a senior executive looking for some insights or an emerging executive on your way up, be inspired and take away practical approaches to better understand where you are in life and where you want to go.

 

SPEAKER BIOS 

Lata Krishnan | Shah Capital and Founder, American India Foundation

Lata Krishnan is a technology entrepreneur, a startup investor and an engaged philanthropist who has extensive experience both in finance and business management, as well as in helping both young venture companies and non-profits scale innovative ideas to deliver impact. The early part of her career was spent at Arthur Andersen in the UK and Montgomery Securities in San Francisco, where she developed her finance skills. She went on to co-found, Smart Modular Technologies (Nasdaq: SGH) and lead as Chief Financial Officer through a public offering. Today Lata is a member of both public and private boards.  She is a member of the Board of Stanford Health Care (SHC) the governing body for Stanford Hospital.  Lata was invited to join the SCH Board in February 2018.  As a private investor in her family office, Shah Capital Partners, she takes an active role in identifying and investing in high-growth opportunities and inspiring entrepreneurs from the technology, energy, real estate, and social impact arenas. Lata’s former public Board of Director positions include Silicon Valley Bank Financial Group (Nasdaq:SIVB) where she served on the Finance and Audit committee from 2008 - 2018. As a very active philanthropist, Lata is the Co-Founder, former President, and current Vice-Chair of the American India Foundation. She also serves on the board of The Commonwealth Club of San Francisco and is a Fellow with the American Leadership Forum. She is also a Senior Advisory Board Member of the London School of Economics, South Asia Centre.  Lata’s areas of focus include education, at-risk children and families, cancer research and economic empowerment of women. Lata is also a Senior Advisory Board Member of the London School of Economics, South Asia Centre. Lata began this Board position at her alma mater in September 2017. Lata received a bachelor of science degree with honors from the London School of Economics and is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.

Kate Cochran | CEO, Upaya Social Ventures

Kate is a fierce believer that global poverty is not inevitable, and that entrepreneurial energy and individual resolve are some of the sharpest tools available to us in that fight. For the past 15 years, she has held leadership positions in international development organizations providing financial services and access to higher education to millions of the world’s poorest citizens. She is currently CEO at Upaya Social Ventures, a nonprofit investment and consulting organization that supports early stage companies with high potential to create dignified jobs for the poorest of the poor in India. Since 2011, Upaya has invested in 14 companies that have created nearly 9,000 lasting jobs. Previous executive roles include Chief Operating Officer for Vittana, an organization creating student loan markets in developing countries and a range of executive roles at Unitus, a microfinance accelerator.  She is a frequent speaker on social entrepreneurship and the intersection of markets and mission at business schools and conferences. Kate holds a BA from Stanford University and an MBA from UCLA Anderson.

Jennifer Ma | Senior Wealth Manager, BNY Mellon Wealth Management

Jennifer Ma is a Senior Wealth Manager with BNY Mellon Wealth Management. In this role she works directly with clients to address their wealth management and investment needs. Jennifer joined BNY Mellon Wealth Management in 2016 through the acquisition of Atherton Lane Advisers, LLC, an independent Registered Investment Adviser, and has nearly 30 years of wealth management experience. Prior to becoming a Portfolio Manager at Atherton Lane Advisers, she spent 15 years in various management positions at JP Morgan, Hambrecht & Quist, and Paine Webber. Jennifer has extensive knowledge of the capital markets, IPOs, restricted stock, executive compensation, and the Asian markets. Her insight is incorporated in the Firm’s investment approach. She travels frequently to Asia. Jennifer received her Master of Business Administration in Finance from the University of San Francisco and her Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of California, Santa Cruz.

 

Mary McDougall | Vice President, ASTIA

Mary McDougall is a corporate innovator and technical business leader who has had four successful exits and participated in ten acquisitions. She was most recently CEO of Survox, a voice survey automation platform, sold to Enghouse (TSX: ENGH). Before Survox, Mary led change and growth initiatives in both public companies and early stage ventures, each focused on applying software technology to business process improvement. A long-time Astia advisor, Mary now manages the Astia Expert Sift process to identify high growth women entrepreneurs and gender-inclusive teams and provide access to the capital and networks needed for growth. She also stays engaged with technology by advising local start-ups through HBS Start-up Partners. Mary was one of the first women to earn an Engineering degree from Dartmouth College before getting her MBA from Harvard Business School.

 

Dr. Hemalee Patel | Board Certified Doctor of Internal Medicine  and Lifestyle Medicine Expert, Stanford University

Dr. Hemalee Patel believes that we each have the power to control our own health using simple lifestyle modifications that can lead to optimal wellness. Her goal is to help patients realize their ability to make positive, healthy changes, and help guide them through this transformation to achieve successful results. Dr. Patel is board certified in Internal Medicine currently practicing at California Pacific Medical Center. She is also on staff at Stanford University Hospital & Clinics, where she was previously a Clinical Instructor, and is a part-time wellness physician at Crossover Health-Facebook Headquarters. Known as a leader in the lifestyle medicine movement, Dr. Patel is a frequent speaker on topics related to empowering and educating individuals using the latest advances in health and wellness so they can prevent and control the development of chronic diseases and achieve balanced lifestyles. She also speaks about how lifestyle approaches can optimize energy levels and productivity. Dr. Patel is a member of the AMA, has served on the board of the National Consortium of Integrative Medicine and her areas of expertise and research include the effects burnout and stress have in leading to chronic diseases. She is currently based in San Francisco, California and has a BA in Economics and English from UC Berkeley with an emphasis in Preventive Medicine and Nutrition.

 

Leigh Wasson | Senior Wealth Director, BNY Mellon Wealth Management

Leigh brings 30 years of investment and client relationship management experience to her role as a Senior Wealth Director with BNY Mellon Wealth Management.  She collaborates with team members and advisors to develop and implement comprehensive wealth management solutions for entrepreneurs, executives, founders, innovators and their family members.  Prior to BNY Mellon, Leigh was Regional Managing Director of Northern California for Citi Private Bank. Leigh’s background also includes 16 years at JP Morgan with both the private bank and the institutional investment management division, where she was a Managing Director with assignments in Australia, London, New York, San Francisco, Silicon Valley and Newport Beach.  Leigh is a Board of Director of Watermark; a Board of Director of the San Francisco Chapter of The Association for Corporate Growth; and a Board of Director of The Japan Society of Northern California. Leigh is a Certified Exit Planning Advisor, and has a BBA in Finance from The University of Texas and an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. She resides in Sausalito and enjoys sailing and hiking.
