At the 2017 Watermark Leadership Conference, we got the chance to connect with Charmaine McClarie, a senior executive coach with decades of experience working with leaders across 27 industries. Charmaine was excited to lead a dialogue about what it means to be seen, heard, remembered and recognized as a leader.
Charmaine summarized her Executive Success Principles: communicate the vision, speak in headlines, have three must-make points, create witnesses, don't audition for the part and embody your message. Charmaine stressed the importance of effective communication to career success and defined a successful leadership presence as "showing up and being your full self."
Charmaine explained that women face the unique challenge of self-definition: "Other people will inevitably define you, but their definition will always be inadequate." She encourages women to observe language, culture and how people are showing up within an organization, and empowers women leaders "by helping them to be themselves and helping them to speak the language of power."
