Women Helping Women vs. The Tyranny of the Queen Bee

By Marilyn Nagel

Last Friday, I read an article in the Wall Street Journal, “The Tyranny of the Queen Bee,” which explains how women who achieved success in male-dominated environments were at times likely to oppose the rise of other women.  While there are many “queen bees,” there are also many more successful women working to uplift, support and sponsor other women. Sheryl Sandberg’s “Lean In” Book and Movement

By Marilyn Nagel

Sheryl Sandberg’s upcoming book and planned movement brings welcome high-powered attention to gender equality. Her work has the potential to renew passion for solving a problem whose solutions have been glacial in coming.

But the lack of equal representation cannot be mostly attributed to women not raising their hands, or “leaning in.” There are countless examples of women who do all the right things in the right ways, with all the right skills and attributes, who still do not move forward.

My fear is that women will embrace Sheryl’s recommendations, put in extra time and effort, deal with family balance challenges. However, without systemic changes from corporations and government, they will simply be more frustrated and demoralized.  Ultimately, Sheryl is asking women to work harder, but evidence shows that most corporations are not meritocracies and that family systems have not changed as dramatically as her own experience suggests. Watermark Entrepreneurs 2.0

By Marilyn Nagel

As we celebrate Watermark’s 20th anniversary year, we’ve been reflecting heavily on who we were when we started, and how far we’ve evolved as an organization today. Those of you who have been with us since the beginning may remember that we were founded as the Forum for Women Entrepreneurs (changed to the Forum for Women Entrepreneurs and Executives in 2003.)

The entrepreneur community at Watermark is still very much a critical audience for us. Towards that end, one of our major focuses in 2013 is to revitalize our programming in support of the exceptional women entrepreneurs in the Watermark family.

Building and growing businesses is what Watermark members do – whether as new start-ups or internal ventures.  The Entrepreneur may be a small business owner, a company founder, or any executive tasked with innovating and growing a new business.  Watermark programs foster a community who all share the entrepreneurial spirit for adventure and growth. The California 400: Still Dominated by Men

By Marilyn Nagel

The business case for increasing the number of women in executive positions and on corporate boards has been proven time and again in study after study.  It is clear that greater diversity on boards improves shareholder performance, helps companies access the widest talent pool, ensures they are more responsive to the market and provides overall stronger corporate governance.
